Zizou Effect at real has Bernabeu buzzing

Jan 13, 2016 Zinedine Zidane’s triumphant start as Real Madrid’s coach recently set the Bernabeu buzzing.

The former Real Madrid and France midfielder, who was appointed to replace Rafa Benitez, saw his team crush Deportivo La Coruna 5-0 in the La Liga.

Three goals from Gareth Bale and two from Karim Benzema saw the 10-times European champions returning to winning ways.

Popularly known as “Zizou”, Zidane was given a huge ovation when he walked out at the giant arena prior to the match.

At his post-match news conference, he said:

“The goal was to bring the ball out from the back and switch wings quickly…the important thing today was the team’s attitude,” he said. “We will improve, we have to improve many aspects and we will, we have time, we have weeks to work on this and we will improve, I am convinced,”

While Deportivo are hardly the strongest opponents Real will face this season, there appears to be solid optimism that the 43-year-old is on his way to success.

“The work Gareth must do is the same as what the rest have to do. When we don’t have the ball, they have to stick together, defend, stay on the right and when we have possession, he has to find openings and play. That’s what he did. I am happy with what he did today, it’s not easy to net three goals in a match.”
