May 21 , 2015 The Nigeria Basketball Federation has named a 16-player squad for the AfroBasket Women 2015 qualifying tournament, taking place this year from June 4 to 6 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. The squad was named ahead of the country’s qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso who have yet to confirm their participation. The competition will also be the yardstick for qualifying for the 11th All-Africa Games in Brazzaville.
Nigeria is already assured of their place at the event in the Republic of Congo, because of their third-place finish at the 2011 edition. If Burkina Faso decides not to play in the three-team competition, the qualifier will become a two-game series between Ivory Coast and Nigeria.
Nigeria’s focus will be on booking a place at AfroBasket Women 2015, which will be held in Yaounde, Cameroon from September 24 to October 3 and this has prompted the association in charge of the sport to invite domestic league and overseas-based players to take part in a camp in Abuja.
Scott Nnaji, the head coach and his assistant Adewumi Aderemi are in high spirits, and the latter is quoted as saying “The players are in high spirits ahead of the all-important qualifiers and will do everything possible to seal their place and be part of Group B,”
All the best, ladies.
