7 Countries Makes the Cut to Host AFCON In 2017
13th Oct 2014 Some time ago we informed you about Libya’s withdrawal of its bid to host the 2017 Afcon Nations Cup. The bid was thrown open, with African nations given till the 30th of September to indicate interest. TimesLive SA tells us that 7 countries have made the cut to host Africa in 2017. They are Algeria, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
The bid was open to countries who already had infrastructure in place and who would be ready to host immediately.
All the other countries indicated have hosted previously with the exception of Kenya and Zimbabwe, who got winning bids, but were unable to eventually host the competitions due to lack of funds.
Remember that Libya lost the chance to host after fighting in the country stopped work on stadium construction. This was a second blow, considering that the country was supposed to host the 2013 games, but swapped with 2017 hosts South Africa because of the unrest.
We won’t know the winning country till 2015, so everyone will just have to keep their fingers crossed and hope for the best.
