South Sudan peace accord signed

Nov 02, 2015 Both sides of the South Sudanese peace talks recently signed an agreement to finalize the implementation of the security arrangements outlined in an IGAD-proposed peace accord early this year.

Speaking after the signing, Michael Makuei, acting chief negotiator for the Government of South Sudan said:

“We start walking on the road to peace. It is from here that we will be in a position now to talk and say that the actual implementation of the agreement will start. We’re optimistic that in the next few days, the parties will be fully involved in the implementation of the agreement,”

Gen.Taban Deng Gai, chief negotiator for the SPLM/SPLA opposition said:

“By signing these minutes of the workshop today, we have one step, one very important step, that’s building trust between the parties to the agreement. And, mainly the government and the SPLM are in opposition. The country is ours, and we believe we can fix it again, and we’re confident. This is a chance for me to pass my message to the people of South Sudan that the SPLM-IO is ready. And, I believe it’s not going to take us more than [a] week or two weeks, then you will see our advanced team to Juba,”
