Taiwan opposition leader says managing risk key in economic ties with China

Jan 05, 2016 During a debate among presidential candidates in Taiwan, the country’s opposition leader Tsai Ing-Wen insisted that risk management is pivotal in maintaining a solid trade and economic tie with China.

“The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has never excluded economic and trade exchanges with China. But we pay attention to the management of the risks. We hope during this process of interaction we have a good national mechanism to correspond to whatever happens to Taiwan’s risks in economy and safety,”

Tsai Ing-wen, who is the chairwoman of the Democratic Progressive Party, went on to say:

“In terms of investing in mainland China, when the Democratic Progressive Party took office, we had set up a complete evaluation and management mechanism. Until now, the Nationalist Party has been following these rules,”

Prior to that, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office chief, Zhang Zhijun, had said in his New Year greeting to the people of Taiwan that complex changes lay ahead with regards to China’s ties with Taiwan.
