Russia offers access to its Syria bases to help deliver aid

Mar 09, 2016 Russia’s Defense Ministry recently asserted that it was ready to give access to its military bases in Syria for humanitarian aid deliveries.

Speaking to this effect, Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said:

“We are talking about providing opportunities for the unloading and temporary storage of humanitarian aid to the Syrian population at the logistics base of the Russian Navy at the port of Tartus. We are willing to assist in receiving cargo aircraft with humanitarian aid for the Syrian population and ensure their unloading and temporary storage at the airbase “Hmeymim.” We are willing to allocate the required number of vehicles for the transportation and delivery of humanitarian cargo from the port of Tartus and Hmeymim airbase in the areas of direct aid distribution for people in need,”

He then went on to assert that the cessation of hostilities has made it possible for Russia to deliver humanitarian aid in some areas of Syria.

“In the Syrian provinces of Hama, Homs, Latakia, Derya, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo and in Damascus we have already delivered and handed over to the local population more than 620 tons of humanitarian aid, medicines and basic necessities,”
