Colombia's Santos calls for disarmament deadline to be set in peace process

Apr 1, 2016 Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos recently demanded a deadline for the complete disarmament of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, as the government and rebels work to end the country’s protracted armed conflict.

Both parties had earlier failed to meet a self-imposed deadline to reach a comprehensive pact.

Speaking to this regards, President Santos said he wants to set an intermediary deadline, to wrap up the disarmament process.

“The government demands a set, precise and clear date to end the disarmament process. Under no circumstances can that date remain open,”

He then went on to insist that the rebels must give up their weapons in order to begin the transition into a political party.
