Tanzania Officially Attains the MDG Number 4 and 5 Goal on Reduction of Infant Mortality.

30 Apr 2014 Tanzania has officially attained MDG’s number 4 and 5 on the reduction of infant mortality, according to a UN report on Child mortality estimates. The country was targeted to reduce theunder 5 mortality rate from 160 per 1000 live births to 54 per 1000 live birth by 2015. However, they have exceeded that target and currently average 50 per 1000 live births.

Vice President of Tanzania, Dr Mohammed Bilal, stated that actions carried out to achieve the aim were; improved malaria control, sustained high immunization coverage, high vitamin ‘A’ supplementation coverage, Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses (IMCI) and health sector reforms.
The Vice President added that the country’s success in achieving these MDGs was facilitated bystrong partnerships, financial support and collaboration with development partners and stakeholders.

He stated that Tanzania still needed to work on improving maternal and newborn health and stressed that this was a key area of focus for the country’s ministry of health.
