World Dance Day Celebration
06 May 2014 The 29th of May marked World Dance Day, a day set aside for dancers and lovers of dance. For the first time, dancers, dance clubs and organizations and supporters of dance in Abuja joined in the celebration, with a dance day cipher, speech and dance-a-thon guest appearances from the American Embassy, The centre for Arts and Culture Abuja and other organizations.
Abuja dancers showed up en masse sporting dance day tees with captions that expressed what dance is to them and how they wish for dance to be perceived by the general public. Dancers presented a wide variety of performances with dance styles ranging from Naija groove, salsa and cultural to hip-hop and hula-hooping.
International Dance Day was introduced in 1982 by the International Dance Council, a UNESCO partner NGO, and its main purpose is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance.
