Alphabet, Indonesian companies to expand web access via balloons

Nov 03, 2015 Alphabet Inc, the new holding company for Google, recently teamed up with three Indonesian telecommunications companies to expand Internet access in the country using solar-powered balloons.

The initiative, which is tagged “Project Loon”, will send solar-powered balloons into the air to deliver Internet access through radio frequency signals to antennae connected to buildings.

Before full-scale service is launched, Alphabet and its partners will deploy hundreds of balloons over the country to determine where gaps in service lie.
