Cameroon working on revolutionizing its transport system by building its first tramway

06 May 2014 Cameroun is looking to revolutionise its transport system and ease transportation by building its first tramway.

To actualize this, the nation has signed an agreement with Belgian company, Préfarail has for the construction of a tramway in the country’s capital, Yaoundé.

Ventures Africa tells us that the agreement was signed by the Managing Director of Préfarail, Joseph Rode and the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi.

The project will commence in 2015 and is estimated to cost about 1 billion dollars for the first 50kilometers. It will operate under the Build Operate Transfer model, meaning that Préfarail will fully finance the project and manage it for a period of time before transferring it to the State.

The Belgian company also has plans to embark on a similar project in the economic capital, Douala after the completion of the Yaoundé tramway.
