Children displaced by Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria to return to school

Dec 01, 2015 Nigerian government recently pledged to reopen schools in the insurgent-hit northeast of the country by the end of this year.

Boko Haram, which literally translates to “Western education is forbidden” in the local Hausa language, deliberately occupied or destroyed educational facilities.

Alhaji Ahmed Satomi, a Nigerian government official said;

“From their name Boko means school and Haram means forbidden. That is their belief. So the first thing they are calling people to do is to avoid western education and now they have subjected as a result of the insurgency more than 400,000 students out of school. So I am sure with the opening of the schools Boko Haram will not be happy at all. They will not be happy at all,”

Returning to school will give young displaced children like Oumar, who dreams to lead Nigeria, hope for the future.

“I want to be the President … President. Nothing less…If I am President, I will be able to help others less fortunate than myself,” said Oumar Sanda
