Chinese restaurant reported for rejecting African customers has been shut down

31st March 2015 A controversial Chinese restaurant in Nairobi Kenya, gained recent popularity and sparked a media outcry when it came out that the restaurant denies African patrons entry after 5pm. Reprisals have come swiftly, as the restaurant has been shut down. The owner has also been arrested for operating the restaurant without a valid license. He faces up to 18 months in jail or a fine of about one thousand dollars if found guilty.

Governor of Nairobi, Evans Kidero in a statement, explained that the owners of the restaurant do not have documents to show that the building was no longer being used as a residence. He stated that the restaurant also lacked a valid liquor license and failed to abide by public health requirements on food handling.

According to him “We have established that the restaurant did not have the licenses and I have ordered it closed until the management complies, the restaurant will remain closed until they comply with all set rules and regulations.”

The restaurant proprietors have attempted to defend themselves, saying the scare of Al Shabaab terrorists made them implement the law.
