Conservation workers battle to rescue elephant from thick mud in Kenya

Mar 10, 2016 An elephant stuck in deep mud in central Kenya was recently freed following extensive efforts from conservationists to rescue the animal, whose population in the wild is seriously threatened by poachers.

The 20-year-old male elephant, which had been trapped overnight in the mud of a dried up well, was pulled free using three cars and tow ropes.

A ranger for conservation trust Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) had initially raised the alarm and later mobilized other staff from the trust and the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to help.

Safari luxury lodge worker Julia Binks, who captured the three-and-a-half hour rescue effort, attested that the animal was alive and well.
