Desmond Tutu visits the Dalai Lama ahead of his 80th birthday

May 6 , 2015 Desmond Tutu, famed for his advocacy anf campaigns against the apartheid regime in his country South Africa, recently visited India to see his friend the Dalai Lama, ahead of the Tibetian spiritual leader’s eightieth birthday which comes up on July six. During his visit, Desmond Tutu told Tibetan children in Dharamsala, a town in the northern part of the country, that he hoped they would go back to Tibet one day. About 134,000 Tibetans live in exile, with most of them in India and Nepal. Their exiled government is located in Dharamsala.

The Nobel laureate said he believed the Chinese government would make Tibet independent and that a day would come when Tibetans in exile would dance and sing in the streets of a free Tibet.

“One day you too, all of you, one day you will see your beloved Tibet, you will be free from the oppression that has driven you to be here,”
