29th Jan 2014 – Egyptian Jehane Noujaim’s short film ‘The Square’ recently won the Best Director – Documentary Feature at the Directors Guild Awards held last Saturday in Los Angeles.
The Square follows the lives of several participants in the live protest in the Tahrir Square, putting a human face on a movement that involved millions of Egyptians.
Taking the stage in accepting her prize, Noujaim told the audience that her film’s sound man was arrested yesterday, a sign of the ongoing struggle of Egyptians.
“I’d like to dedicate this award to our fellow Egyptians, who are still in the streets fighting. Yesterday, our sound guy was arrested, and so people, as I speak, are still struggling but they’re struggling for a better world”, said Jehane Noujaim.
The film won the awards at the Sundance Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, and is nominated for an Oscar this year.
