Egypt's court of appeals rejects Mubarak and sons appeal of jail sentence

Jan 13, 2016 Egypt’s court of appeals recently rejected an appeal by former president Hosni Mubarak and his two sons over a three-year jail sentence for corruption. Mubarak and his sons were slapped with a three-year jail term in a retrial on charges of diverting public funds.

While reading the verdict, Judge Alfarhan Batran said:

“The court has ruled to accept the appeal in terms of procedure, but to refuse it substantively. End of session,”

The court also issued a fine of 125 million Egyptian pounds and ordered the return of 21 million pounds to the state treasury.

According to a source from the court, Mubarak and his sons had paid 104 million during the trial period.

Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years before being ousted in 2011, along with his sons Gamal and Alaa had already spent at least three years each in prison for other cases.

Mubarak’s treatment by the courts has been deemed too lenient by his opponents.

However, his supporters showed up outside the court house chanting “Mubarak is innocent” after the verdict was read.
