Nov 26, 2015 FIFA ethics investigators recently called for sanctions against President Sepp Blatter and European soccer boss Michel Platini. This came as another blow to Michael Platini’s bid to succeed Blatter as head of FIFA.
Blatter and Platini were both issued a provisional 90-day ban by FIFA’s Ethics committee following a corruption scandal that has engulfed the soccer governing body.
The investigatory chamber of FIFA’s ethics committee, which operates independently of the organization’s leadership, said it had completed its inquiry. However due to legal reasons, it could not reveal why it was recommending sanctions or what those sanctions should be.
The ethics panel released a statement saying:
“The investigatory chamber of the independent Ethics Committee has submitted its final reports containing requests for sanctions against Joseph (Sepp) Blatter and Michel Platini to the adjudicatory chamber chaired by Hans-Joachim Eckert
For reasons linked to privacy rights and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the chamber will not publish details of the concluded reports and the requested sanctions against the two officials.”
Up until his recent suspension, Michel Platini had been considered favorite to replace Blatter as head of FIFA.
However, he has appealed to the Court of Arbitration of Sport against his provisional ban.
