17th June 2014 How many of you have heard of the TPL. Not EPL, TPL. Twitter Premier League. Well listen up.
We know how Nigerians love football and social media, and so, a couple of friends thought about bringing the two together to create the Twitter Premier League. The inaugural TPL edition was a one day tournament which held on the 29th of May at Meadow Hall, Lekki. Four teams participated; The Guns, The Rebels, the Blues and The Red Devils, yes, I’m sure we can all see where they got their inspiration. And get this, each team made up of total strangers and wholly sourced on Twitter.
The Red Devils and The Blues safely negotiated the group stages and got to the finals, with the Red Devils finally winning the cup after a goalless draw led to a 4 – 3 penalty score. And for those of you who still think that women don’t like football, 2 female teams – the Tsarinas and the Panthers played an all star game which ended 2-0 in favor of the Tsarinas.
Samsung Nigeria gave out prizes to all the winners but I’m sure you’ll agree that more of a prize than that was the fun, the laughter and the sheer enjoyment of watching strangers become friends.
