Jan 26, 2016 Rickie Fowler recently fought off a late charge from Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters to win the Abu Dhabi Championship by one stroke to land his fourth title in eight months.
The victory effectively propelled him to fourth place in the world’s rankings.
Speaking after the victory, Fowler:
“This was a big one…Last year, obviously, having a multiple-win season, but to come back and work on getting back in the winner’s circle after a successful season. Keep moving forward, and this was a great start and a great filed that HSBC has helped put together here. The course was in perfect shape, it was a lot of fun today. It was a bit stressful at times. Thomas (Pieters) was playing well, it was fun to go head to head with him in the same group. We had a good time and it is just nice to come out on top this week.”
The worlds number three, Rory Mcilroy said:
“Not quite what I wanted it seems this could be the tournament I can’t quite master,” he said. “I have played a lot of good golf here on this course in Abu Dhabi. I was saying there, there was a stretch of 18 holes in the middle of the golf tournament I played them in one over par and you just can’t do that. I wasted a lot of opportunities out there this week so it is a story of what could have been. Still a good finish and a lot of good golf in there so plenty of positives to take away.”
