French Energy Giant, TOTAL Opens a $1.5 Million Environmental-Friendly Solar Powered Service Station in Lagos.

24th June 2014 It’s definitely a positive turn of events when corporations decide to pursue more environmentally friendly solutions in their operations and so we’re quite pleased with energy corporation Total. Ventures Africa tells us that as part of its commitment to providing greener services across Africa, the French energy giant has opened a $1.5 million environmental-friendly solar powered service station in Lagos; the first of its kind in the West African region.

Senior Vice president Total AMO, Momar Nguer affirmed that the service station is part of the company’s vow to produce innovative and safe energy in line with international health and safety standards. He added that Total’s motivation was not purely financial, but also out of a desire to impact positively in the lives of people in developing economies.

Total will launch an additional solar-powered service station in Nigeria’s capital Abuja before the end of the year and by 2017, it expects to have all its service stations across Nigeria to adapt this new model.

In addition, Total Nigeria Managing Director Alexis Vovk has stated that it is also working on providing effective and environmentally friendly power solutions for Africans. Some solutions include the Awango by Total solar lamps, hybrid energy solutions for the telecommunications industry and of course, the newly launched solar-powered service station.

The company plans to provide access to lighting for 5 per cent “off-the-grid” households in Nigeria in the next three years through the sale of its solar lamps. The lamps will be sold at Total service stations and in partnership with NGOs and cooperative societies.
