Ghana plans to convert seaweed to biogas

29th Jan 2015 In a first of its kind project in Ghana, a team of experts from the Technical University of Denmark, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research will cultivate seaweed for the production of biofuel and pharmaceutical products to impact the energy needs of Ghana and beyond.
Dr. Moses Mensah who is the coordinator for the project in Ghana has said that locally available enzymes will be used in the extraction of the useful materials from the seaweed.
He is quoted as saying “The cultivated seaweed will go through a number of processes that will be done at the chemical engineering department to extract the nutrients”.
The project which will commence this week will see the cultivation of seaweed along Ghana’s coastline, and is expected to improve businesses and investments, build necessary technology and develop local industries.
