It’s now one term only for presidents in Columbia

June 9, 2015 While in some parts of the world, failing leaders refuse to exit gracefully, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia has done just the opposite. President Santos backed a Congress vote to prevent presidents from seeking re-election after a term, fulfilling an earlier to do away with the practice.

News has it that the new measure is part of a broader package of government reforms approved despite objections from the opposition Democratic Center party.

70 percent of Colombians backed the proposal to ban presidential re-election altogether according to surveys and the prevailing sentiment was echoed by the Interior Minister of the country Juan Fernando Cristo who said it would fight “the temptation to abuse power.”
