Kenya’s cabinet minister warns postal and courier services in the country to embrace technology

2nd March 2015 Still on matters from Kenya, a Cabinet minister has encouraged traditional communication channels to embrace technology, to keep their businesses relevant and alive.

Fred Matiang’i made the recommendation while addressing the Postal Corporation of Kenya and other courier service providers in the country at a three day East African communications organization conference. This year, the conference focused on transforming the postal and courier sector in the country, as well as involving ICTs in the system.

Mr Matiang’i is quoted as saying “The ICT sector today is undergoing tremendous changes, thanks to increased liberalization, competition and emergence of new technologies. The changing environment calls for adjustments in operations to survive the intense competitive pressure from other ICT-enabled services such as instant messaging technologies. Posta still has an opportunity despite the coming of new communication technologies,”

The postal sector in Kenya is estimated to be worth thirteen billion Shillings annually and so the conference, for officials from the Universal Postal Union and the Pan African Postal Union, and other stakeholders, is indeed timely.
