Kerber returns to Germany after her Australian open triumph

Feb 04, 2016 Angelique Kerber recently returned home to Germany after defeating Serena Williams at the Australian Open to become the first German since 1999 to win a grand slam tennis title.

The 28-year-old, who has risen to number two on the WTA Tour rankings, was given a warm reception on her return to Frankfurt.

Commenting on her victory, she said:

“I slept really well. I really slept 25 hours straight through and was able to let all the emotions go through my head, and it really is quite crazy, and something special that I achieved the last two weeks. And now to arrive here as grand slam champion, that really is something very special… Everyone recognizes me since I left Melbourne, and that is certainly something special. So yes, it is all quite different now.”

By producing a superb defense along the baseline chasing down Williams’ blistering groundstrokes and forcing the American to play one extra shot, she proved the 21-times grand slam winner was fallible.

“It’s wonderful, it is a dream that’s now come true. I have achieved what I have worked at for so long and dreamt of for so long. And to play against Serena Williams in the final, that was also something quite special for me. That is it, it’s indescribable, you can’t describe it in words.”
