June 8, 2015 Ghana’s Michael Essien received a hero’s welcome in his soon be base in Athens, Greece, when he traveled to the country to fulfill his part of a one million euro deal that he will soon enter with Greek team Panathinaikos. The contract is expected to last for two years and will begin as soon as Essien’s 18 month contract with AC Milan is over, at the end of June.
His flight touched down around 7 in the evening of June first and there were hundreds of people waiting to greet the football star at the stadium, including some of the team’s officials.
The top midfielder was happy with his reception and took to twitter where he tweeted: “Just touched down in Athens and the love of the Panathinaikos fans was incredible”
Essien is currently with the club on a free transfer and looks forward to gaining lots of silverware for his new team.
He is quoted as saying on the club’s website “I am very happy to be here and to continue my career in Panathinaikos, I am looking forward to meet my new team and winning trophies with my new team-mates,”
Although Essien’s form so far has been less than wonderful, the star is a previous winner of the Cup, two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one League Cup – all gained during his time at Chelsea.
With one million euros a year for the duration of the 2 year deal, we do hope that Essien can bring his glory days to his new team
