Niassa National Reserve Mozambique Finds a New Way For Curtailing Poaching.

15th Sep 2014 And from TimesLive SA, Mozambique is recording a rare win in its fight against poachers with the recent arrest of six suspected poachers in the Niassa National Reserve, a vast nature reserve twice the size of South Africa’s flagship Kruger National Park.

With over 500 elephants killed this year alone and Mozambique’s rhino population completely extinguished, the pressure has been heavy on the country to display more proactiveness in dealing with poachers.

The Niassa Reserve is home to about two-thirds of Mozambique’s elephants but due to its large size, authorities have found it difficult to curtail poaching. However, the reserve now has 200 scouts supported by a spotter plane and intermittent helicopter flights working to deal with the issue and this recent arrest shows that some progress is being made.
