Nigerian president elect talks tough on corruption

21st April 2015 The President Elect of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari has unfolded some of his plans to tackle corruption and increase accountability under his administration. One of his methods he says, will be to ensure that anyone who wants to work in a political position must declare their assets before and after their time in office.

The president shared this information in an interview with Sahara TV and is quoted as saying “All those that were governors, ministers, permanent secretaries, head of foreign staff and all those with political appointments will have to declare their assets on the assumption of their appointment and definitely with the courts. And once they leave they have to re-declare their assets.”

Mr. Buhari gave his word to be uninvolved with the judiciary in the fight against corruption but emphasized that he would strengthen the justice system. He stated that his administration would not become embroiled in investigation of every ministry, as the government would then not have time to move forward.
