Olympic fencer first to wear hijab for USA

Mar 18, 2016 Olympic Fencer Ibtihaj Muhammad recently talked about becoming the first U.S. Olympic athlete to wear a hijab while competing at the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

Speaking on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”, Ibtihaj said:

“My brothers played football and my sister played volleyball,” said Muhammad. “I tried all these sports growing up and with each sport my mom had to alter the uniform for me by adding long sleeve or pants. We were literally parked at a stoplight when I was 12 and she noticed at the local high school the kids had on these masks and they had on long pants and they had on long sleeves. She was like, ‘I don’t know what that is but when you get to high school I want you to try it.”
