Pierre Nkurunziza wins third term as Burundi’s president

July 30, 2015 Burundi’s electoral commission has announced incumbent President, Pierre Nkurunziza as winner of the nation’s presidential election. Despite widespread criticism, Nkurunziza ran for a third five-year term as the leader of the African nation.

Pierre Claver Ndayicariye, head of the electoral commission, speaking to newsmen said:

And so we are here at the Royal Palace Hotel for this information, long awaited by the country, by the candidates and the international community,

He went on to say that Nkurunziza had won 69.41 percent of the votes cast, with the nearest rival, Agathon Rwasa, pulling 18.99 percent of the votes.

The elections took place on the 21st of July, despite calls by African and Western leaders for it to be delayed due to rising insecurity.
