Reactions mixed among Egyptians after Mubarak's appeal rejected

Jan 14, 2016 Following the recently rejection of former president Hosni Mubarak’s appeal by the Egyptian court of appeals, there were several mixed reaction on the streets of Cairo.

The 87-year-old was sentenced to three years in jail without parole along with his sons, Alaa and Gamal, over charges of misappropriating 125 million Egyptian Pounds.

Reacting to this, Sayed Abdul Ghani, secretary assistant of Egypt’s Bar Association said:

“The importance of this judgment means that relevant institutions got a basis when pursuing Mubarak and his sons’ assets from offshore banks. They will be able to recover these stolen state properties. Plus, this judgment deprived him and his sons’ political rights and banned them from entering politics and running for elections,”

For most Egyptians, the protracted trial had worn off their interests in the case.

Although many hold different views on whether or not Mubarak is guilty, most of them agree that it’s time to put the case to bed.

A resident of Cairo said:

“The judgment is actually meaningless, because this sentence cannot even be executed to him, as he already spent over four years in detention. There will be no more three years for him,”

Another citizen said:

“Even if he’s sentenced to death, what will it bring to our ordinary people? What benefit can we get from it?”
