Russian athletes stripped of medals after CAS upholds IAAF appeal

Mar 28, 2016 Several Russian athletes, including 2012 Olympic gold medalist Sergey Kirdyapkin, were recently stripped of their medals and race wins, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the IAAF’s appeal against the Russian Anti-doping Agency.

Sergey Kirdyapkin is set to be stripped of the 50-km walk gold medal he won at the 2012 London Olympics while 2011 world silver medallist Vladimir Kanaykin is also set to lose her silver medal from the 20km walk race.

Australia’s Jared Tallent, who has long campaigned for the Russian’s Olympic title to be stripped, would receive the gold medal if it’s upgraded by the International Olympic Committee.

The IAAF had earlier said that Russia still had a significant amount of work to do for the ban to be lifted ahead of the Rio Olympics in August. However, more positive drugs tests have emerged in recent weeks involving Russian wrestlers and swimmers.
