Serena Williams overcomes illness to whoop Timea Bacsinszky in France.
June 9, 2015 And tennis star, Serena Williams recently put up a performance in France that would put bionic woman to shame when despite being really ill, the American whooped a fitter and younger opponent, Timea Bacsinszky in the third set of a semi-final at a slam.
The remarkable performance saw the two-time champion, who is also the oldest player standing at 33, coughing, sweating heavily and groaning in pain for nearly two hours on the hottest day of the tournament. She did it however, with a 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 win. It was a stunning victory. The star got encouraging cheers from her sister Venus, who from the sidelines intermittently shouted “Stay strong!” “Keep going!”
According to Serena, “I don’t think I have ever been this sick. I can’t believe I won because I got the flu after my third-round match and haven’t been getting better. Hopefully, this is the worst and I thought I was going to lose and suddenly I was one set all and thought ‘I really don’t feel like playing a third set because I am so tired. It is a blessing.”
This is Serena’s 3rd French Open and 3rd successive Grand slam win. With this win, Serena is the third player in the world, male or female, to win 20 major singles titles.
We love this quote that summed up the great effort it took for her to win this game. She says I stopped thinking and I started playing and I started doing and next thing you know I won.”
Yes indeed! Congratulations Serena!
