Aug 7, 2015 With the FIFA Presidency up for grabs, these are interesting times for lovers of football. According to a report from Global Watch foundation, South African businessman and former political prisoner Tokyo Sexwale is another person who is considering running for president of the world’s football governing body FIFA.
Peter-Paul Ngwenya, a spokesperson for the Global Watch foundation said:
“Mr. Sexwale has been approached to put his name forward as a candidate for the FIFA presidency by several highly placed personalities within the football fraternity including people from the private sector…He is in the process of consulting, following which he will then make up his mind,”
Sexwale, was a close friend of Nelson Mandela, with whom he spent 13 years in the Robben Island prison. Should Sexwale make his candidacy official, he will be up against the likes of UEFA president Michel Platini, who has emerged as the early frontrunner in the race to replace Sepp Blatter as head of FIFA.
The world’s football governing body has endured several months of turmoil after several of its official along with sports marketing executives and soccer officials were indicted in the United States on bribery, money laundering and wire fraud charges.
