Tennis fans flock to opening day of US Open

Sep 3, 2015 Tennis fans recently crowded their way into the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center to witness the start of the U.S. Open.

The crowd especially turned their focus towards Serena Williams, who is on the brink of the grandest achievement in tennis; a single season Grand Slam.

The 33-year-old superstar, who already has the 2015 Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in her trophy cabinet, is poised to complete the first season’s sweep of the slams since Steffi Graf in 1988.

Speaking about it, Lisa Bizzell, a tennis fan from Dallas said:

“It’s going to be awesome. It’s going to be historic. She’s already got the Serena Slam. Now, to get the Grand Slam in the calendar year – she’s the greatest of all time, hands down, and this will solidify it,

Serena wasn’t the only attraction for the day as tennis sensation Rafael Nadal, a 14-times grand slam singles winner, was also on the books.

Another fan dropped a joke by saying:

“We’re big fans of Rafa Nadal. I’m happily married, but my wife says if she ever leaves me for somebody, it’s going to be for Rafa,”

Several A-list players were in action on the first day, with last year’s finalists Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori stepping up for early action. World number one, Novak Djokovic played later in the afternoon while Williams and Nadal put the highlight on the day with their evening appearances.
