U.S. civil rights advocate creates colour storm.

June 24, 2015 There have been a lot of mixed reactions regarding Rachel Dolezal, the American civil rights advocate who was busted for claiming to be of African heritage while being very Caucasian, at least according to her genes.

Dolezal however has come out in an interview on NBC’s “Today” show, to say she identifies with Black and that she began portraying herself this way as early as age 5. She believes her identity was “not some freak … mockery black-face performance”, but real. Rachel Dolezal grew up with adopted black siblings, and had a major shift in her identity as she was doing human rights work in Idaho where newspaper stories described her as transracial, biracial and black.

The 37 year old has since resigned as president of the Spokane chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a leading U.S. civil rights organization, in the thick of her identity drama.

She claims in her defence “I was drawing self-portraits with the brown crayon instead of the peach crayon and the black curly hair,”

“I have a huge issue with black-face. This is not some freak birth of a nation mockery black face performance. This is on a very real connected level, of how I have actually had to go there with the experience.”

“I actually was talking to one of my sons yesterday,” she said. “He said, ‘Mom, racially, you’re human and culturally you’re black.”

We know this topic has broken the internet and back, but what’s your say on the whole issue guys? Let us know.
