Wayne Rooney becomes England's all-time record scorer

Sep 14, 2015 Wayne Rooney recently became England’s all-time record scorer when he smashed home his 50th international goal during England’s 2-0 victory over Switzerland in their Euro 2016 Group E qualifier at Wembley.

The 29 year old broke Bobby Charlton’s record of 49 goals  when he thundered his spot kick past Swiss keeper Yann Sommer after Granit Xhaka had fouled Raheem Sterling in the 84th minute.

Prior to the game, Rooney told reporters he would like to score his 50th goal at Wembley and got his wish.

“Of course it would be nice to do it at Wembley. Iconic stadium, obviously for everyone in England and around the world, so it would be nice to do it and move on from that and concentrate on the team again. And to me that is the most important thing is to try to win the game tomorrow and as you said finish the group top. So if it happens tomorrow great but if not it is not something that concerns me, the main concern is the game,”

Back in the dressing room, the FA presented the 29-year-old with a replica shirt with “Rooney 50” on the back. Bobby Charlton will be invited to present his fellow Manchester United great Rooney with a golden boot to mark the record before England’s next home match against Estonia in October.

”Thank you to everyone, coaches, players, staff I have worked with for such a long time, this is such a huge moment for myself and my family and my career. So, hopefully for the team and myself a lot more to come, be successful and hopefully there’s a lot of younger lads, Harry (Kane), coming through, Ross (Barkley) coming through and come close and even pass me in the future, so I’m grateful, it means the world to me and thank you very much.” said Rooney.
