WIND ENERGY BLOWS ITS WAY INTO SOUTH AFRICA

12 Feb 2014 – And we look at energy next with a report from TimesLive SA that South Africa’s energy grid has received one of its first injections of wind energy since Umoya Energy’s 37-turbine Hopefield wind farm was certified fully operational on the first of February.

The Hopefield wind farm will generate enough electricity to power about 70,000 low-income or 29,000 medium-income homes. Umoya Energy was awarded a power purchase agreement in the first round of the Department of Energy’s renewable energy independent power producer programme.

South Africa is marshalling a slow move to broadening the country’s energy resources. The country’s grid is currently coal-dependent, with about 90% of the country’s energy coming from coal.
