Ghana’s energy consultant says Nigeria did not cut off gas supply to Ghana

2nd April 2015 And Edward Bawa, Ghana’s Communications Consultant to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, has said that contrary to reports and speculations from some quarters, Nigeria has not cut gas supply to Ghana. Bawa in an interview with popular news site myjoyonline said Ghana’s power plants were running on gas supplied from Nigeria.

He added that some faulty plants have been undergoing some repairs, but insisted that Nigeria has not cut gas supply to Ghana.

Mr. Bawa said that Ghana is indebted to Nigeria Gas, corroborating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who said the current power crisis in Ghana partly due to government’s failure to settle a $100 million debt it owes Nigeria Gas.

According to Dr. Bawumia, “Nigeria Gas is, therefore, dragging its feet with regards to the supply of gas while this amount is unpaid. Ultimately, the dumsor problem is more of a financial problem than a technical one,”

“Dumsor” is a Ghanaian lingua for unsteady power supply.
