Nollywood’s biggest-ever movie, The Wedding Party, now available on Netflix

Lagos, Nigeria – After a record-breaking run at the box office, Nigeria’s first million-dollar movie, The Wedding Party, has come to Netflix due to growing demand from Nollywood fans worldwide.

When it was first released in cinemas in December 2016, no one knew whether this muchhyped romantic comedy would live up to expectations. However, within two weeks, it had smashed the Nollywood box-office record of N178.5 million and kept cinemas full until well after Valentine’s Day. By early March, it had added over N270 million and become the highest-grossing Nollywood film in history with N453 million.

With its release on Netflix, The Wedding Party is set to thrill Nigerians and other Africans in the diaspora who have been asking about possible cinema release. Enthusiastic fans give multiple reasons for the film’s appeal, but they all seem to agree on a few key ingredients: a good script, a romantic storyline, strong family themes, beautiful sets, gorgeous costumes, lots of laughs, and characters that they can relate to. Moreover, everyone identifies with the lavish Nigerian wedding, contentious relatives and almost-chaotic proceedings.

The story follows the challenges faced by reformed playboy, Dozie, and his virgin bride, Dunni, as they try to tie the knot in a lavish wedding celebration. However, before they can emerge as a couple, they have to overcome a hostile mother-in-law, a sexy ex-girlfriend who’s still besotted, an indiscreet best man, gate-crashers from the village and a trigger-happy thief.

Mo Abudu, Executive Producer of The Wedding Party, is excited to see the reaction of audiences outside Nigeria. “We set out, quite deliberately, to make a high-quality film that Africans would be proud of. This is a process we started with Fifty (also on Netflix), the debut feature from EbonyLife Films, which was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2015 and the only Nigerian title screened at the BFI London Film Festival that year.”

Fan of the genre will notice that The Wedding Party avoids the technical glitches that affect most Nollywood productions, in terms of continuity, editing, cinematography and the soundtrack, thereby increasing its appeal. The cast give superb performances, with relative newcomers like Banky W and Adesua Etomi, looking comfortable alongside veteran actors Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ireti Doyle and the comedy genius of Sola Sobowale.

CELIBACY

Celibacy, for those who don’t know, means zero sex. Zero fun in the sheets, only hand holding, staring into each other’s eyes and dropping bae off at their door. In this society we live in where the legal age for sex is 16, my 12 year old cousin looks 25, skirts are shorter than ever and in some cultures some 14 year olds are on baby number two how are we expected to stay celibate?

Oreka Godis dives into this controversial topic with Sade Ladipo outspoken TV Personality and Chizoba Ofeogu Emotional Confidence Coach with differing opinions. On team celibacy rocks, Chizoba (who is celibate) says that Christians should not fall into the trap of adopting the “Assistant Holy Ghost role” just because you are celibate does not make you a pastor or give you access to the book of life. She says to be celibate you should know why because if you have decided to go on strike and your partner is still working you will go from being the main plate to a side dish very quickly. If you want to be celibate find somebody who will grab.

On team no celibacy Sade says celibacy is unrealistic in today’s day and age. She says we should aim for sexual discipline, not just jumping from person to person. The saying is too much of a good thing is bad for you. But if you are celibate is it only in marriage that you get to have sex? So if you don’t marry will you be a virgin till you die? Scary thought right?

To watch the whole episode and weigh in on this controversial topic, Tune in to EbonyLife TV and Urban 96 FM Love Lounge on Mondays at 10pm WAT or Friday by 10:30pm WAT.

Let’s Talk About Secks

mens-corner-does-size-matterHow do you even start a conversation about sex, because a description isn’t very helpful. Sex is very essential, wars have been started, won and lost because someone whispered something to someone during sex. People have decided to spend their lives with someone because of really good sex and maybe some of them have regretted it but who really cares.

Women will tell you one of the basic requirements of good sex is to have a large instrument of office, preferably one that will occupy the gates of the kingdom. A lot of men have low self-esteem because of this. When some men’s instruments have been fully charged, it looks like others on low power. You really don’t want to be that guy that brings an elephant into the room because when you dropped your pants what is revealed is anything but an elephant.

does-size-matter-mens-corner

But then having the instrument is one thing, completing the assignment is another thing. No one likes it when a lady had to fake an orgasm but the truth is she wouldn’t need to fake it if the guy knew how to whip it like it’s hot.

But perhaps the most important thing about sex, is not getting pressured into it. If you want to be celibate or even remain a virgin do feel free. It’s better to be more comfortable with yourself for not having sex than constantly getting worried and asking for forgiveness and benediction from whichever benevolent deity you believe in.

But should you decide to have sex watching EbonyLife TV’s Men’s Corner to get you into the mood isn’t a bad idea. Or you can just watch it and cry about your single pringle-dom every Tuesdays and Thursdays by 10pm WAT/11pm.
